Is It Normal to Be Sore After a Chiropractic Adjustment?

You just had your first chiropractic adjustment. You felt great walking out of the clinic. But the next day? Maybe your back is a little stiff. Your neck feels different. You’re wondering if something went wrong.

Short answer: no. You’re fine.

Mild soreness after an adjustment is completely normal. In fact, it often means your body is doing exactly what it should be doing.

Your Body Just Moved in a New Way

When your chiropractor adjusts your spine, your posture changes. That’s the whole point. At Southside Chiropractic in Edmonton, we actually measure your posture before and after you start care. You can see and feel the difference for yourself. We use clear, repeatable measurements so the changes aren’t a guess.

However, your posture has likely been the way it was for months. Maybe years. Your body has gotten used to it. When your alignment shifts, the tiny muscles that support your spine and joints suddenly have to work in a new way. And they’re just not used to it yet.

Think of It Like the Gym

Imagine you haven’t been to the gym in six months. Then you go back and do a real workout. The next day, you feel it. Your muscles are sore. You walk a little stiffer. You feel every flight of stairs. That doesn’t mean you hurt yourself or that the workout was bad for you. It means muscles you hadn’t used in a while just got woken up.

A chiropractic adjustment is similar. The small stabilizing muscles around your spine and joints (the ones that should be doing their job) are now being asked to engage. They’re tired. They’re a bit sore. And that’s part of the process.

How to Manage the Soreness

The soreness usually only lasts a day or two. To help it pass:

  • Apply gentle heat. A warm shower, heating pad, or warm bath can soothe the area.
  • Move gently. Light walking is one of the best things you can do. South Edmonton’s River Valley, Mill Creek Ravine, and Whitemud Creek trails are perfect for this.
  • Stay hydrated. Water supports your tissues as they adapt.
  • Sleep well. Your body does most of its repair work overnight.

What we don’t recommend: lying on the couch all day. Stillness tends to make the soreness stick around longer. Gentle movement helps your body settle into its new patterns and posture.

It Gets Easier Over Time

A lot of our patients tell us their soreness gets less and less after each visit. Regular chiropractic care helps restore better movement patterns over time. The small muscles around your spine start to get used to their new (better) role. Your joints move the way they’re meant to. Your nervous system updates its map of how your body is positioned. The shock of “this is new” fades. And the soreness fades with it.

If your soreness is intense, lasts more than a few days, or you’re worried about it, let your chiropractor know. We’d rather hear from you than have you guess. Your chiropractor can also modify their style of adjusting tailored specifically to your body, which is why communication is important to come up with a plan together moving forward.
