Posture Correction in Edmonton

close up of spine modelGiven the massive amount of time people spend daily on their digital devices, it’s no wonder that posture suffers. Whether they’re hunched forward on a Zoom call, streaming a show on their tablet or texting on their smartphone, posture can suffer dramatically.

Poor Posture–Poor Mechanics

When we have poor posture, we automatically have poor mechanics, which we call flexor dominance. That typically means your body is bent forward in that protective position. Usually if you’ve been injured, tired, or have been under chronic stress, your body goes into that protective posture. If you’ve been in that posture for a while, your spine has a difficult time extending.

The postural tension test is one of the tests we do during the first visit to South Side Chiropractic. Dr. Don will have a patient stand against the wall with their shoulders, buttocks and heels right against the wall. “I can see where they feel tension in their body. Almost all of the new patients who come in feel uncomfortable when we put them into ideal posture,” he said.

Good Posture–Strong Extensor Muscles

To have good posture, you need strong extensor muscles. The only way to have strong extensor muscles is to extend your spine comfortably. If you can’t comfortably extend your spine, and the muscles get weak, you’ll experience even more forward head posture.

How Chiropractic May Help

With chiropractic care, we slowly retrain the spine to extend more comfortably. So you can fire your extensors more often, and they can strengthen so you can get better posture.

This is the same thing with an injury. You always want to start with posture improvement–with chiropractic first. That’s because we need to have movement in the spine. Then later on, you can do exercise and movement, because then the spine is moving, so you can comfortably fire those muscles.

Conditions That Improve with Posture Correction

When your posture improves, you may also see improvement in the following:

  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Shoulder issues
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands
  • Pain between the shoulder blades
  • Pain in the ribs or in the chest
  • Tight hip flexors
  • Low back pain
  • Hip issues
  • Knee issues
  • Bunions
  • Tight hamstrings and calves

We’re all about spinal efficiency, from all angles. Since the pandemic, people’s posture has become considerably worse, because many individuals have been at home more often, moving less frequently, and sitting at a desk all day working. Forward head posture problems have dramatically increased because of inactivity during the pandemic,

When we have chronic poor posture, we find it decreases brain function. Fortunately, chiropractic care can help improve posture, which can help the brain become more aware.
